Parabens come in many forms (methyl paraben, ethyl paraben, propyl paraben, etc.)—and are a low-cost class of chemicals used to preserve hair products, shaving creams, lotions, makeup and moisturizers—as well as some food additives.
While research is controversial, many studies indicate that paraben use, particularly on a large scale, may cause skin allergies and skin irritation. Some research has also shown that when parabens reach a “threshold level” in the body, they may contribute to an increased chance of breast cancer. However, the less obvious paraben forms include benzyl-, ethyl-, butyl- and propyl- parahydroxybenzoic acid (or p-hydroxybenzoic acid), along with parahydroxybenzoate.
