Embracing Paraben-Free Skincare

It’s no surprise that over-the-counter skincare products contain a lengthy list of preservatives, chemicals and synthetic ingredients that we’d be better off without. And while scientists are still Skincare, Parabens, Smile and Skin Aesthetics in Waltham, MAunsure about the long-term affects of these products, there is a great deal of research indicating that natural skincare options are better for your skin and your overall health.

Parabens: What Are They, and Why Should We Care?

Parabens come in many forms (methyl paraben, ethyl paraben, propyl paraben, etc.)—and are a low-cost class of chemicals used to preserve hair products, shaving creams, lotions, makeup and moisturizers—as well as some food additives.

While research is controversial, many studies indicate that paraben use, particularly on a large scale, may cause skin allergies and skin irritation. Some research has also shown that when parabens reach a “threshold level” in the body, they may contribute to an increased chance of breast cancer. Further research is still needed to isolate the threat posed by parabens, but until then, the best way to avoid exposure is to avoid paraben overload.

Preventing Paraben Exposure

When parabens are included in your favorite cosmetic or hygiene product, you’ll usually see the word “paraben” in some form on the ingredient list. However, the less obvious paraben forms include benzyl-, ethyl-, butyl- and propyl- parahydroxybenzoic acid (or p-hydroxybenzoic acid), along with parahydroxybenzoate. And, while it’s tough to find natural products in mainstream grocery and drug stores, some product lines are developing paraben-free options.

The best way to avoid unnecessary exposure to parabens is to purchase skincare products from a trusted, reputable medical source. At Smile and Skin, we recommend Environ, our line of advanced, clinically safe skincare products that are effective for a variety of skin types. Environ products are paraben-free, and contain the vitamins, antioxidants and bio-peptides that your skin requires to remain supple, smooth and radiant. In addition, Environ products contain UVA and UVB filters that protect your skin from the damaging rays of the sun.
