Feeding Your Skin from the Inside Out

The condition of your skin is a telltale sign of your overall health and nutrition. While cosmetics and lotions can clear or improve your complexion, what you put on your fork—not just your face—has a significant impact on achieving the youthful, radiant skin you desire.

Dry, flaky, red and dull skin is often an outward indication of the lack of nutrients your body craves. Since what you consume will eventually manifest itself on your largest and most visible organ Eating Healthy for Healthy Skin, Smile and Skinthe skin), be sure to nourish your body with a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, omega-3 fatty acids and whole grains. Essential vitamins and minerals found in these types of foods can slow down the aging process by repairing damaged body cells and supporting skin structure. The next time you’re in the grocery store, stock up on foods that feed your skin from the inside out.

  1. Fluids: Your body is made up of 70% water, so drink enough fluids to hydrate your organs.  Water also flushes out toxins from the body, and keeps skin moist.
  2. Foods high in Vitamin A, C and E: These contain antioxidants that maintain skin tissue and fight free radicals that age and damage the skin. Look for low-fat dairy products, berries, orange-colored fruits and vegetables, and dark green leafy vegetables.
  3. Essential fatty acids—Omega-3 & Omega 6: The omegas are critical to reducing inflammation and promoting strong cell membranes. Salmon, walnuts, flaxseed oil, canola and olive oil are good sources of essential fatty acids.
  4. Whole grains: Products like cereal and bread contain selenium, which protects against damage from free radicals.

In addition to healthy eating, skincare treatments—like the ones offered by board-certified Medical Aesthetician Stacey Powell—can help to reverse the intrinsic aging process while restoring skin to its most beautiful. An Age Management Resurfacing Facial can remove some of the unwanted signs of aging through the use of powerful Vitamin A, C and E. These vitamins feed the skin’s upper layers and promote healthy cell growth. Smile and Skin Aesthetics also offers an advanced skin care line, Environ, that’s clinically proven to smooth and tighten the skin.  To find out more about our facial and spa treatment packages or to schedule a skincare consultation, call today at (781) 893-7500.
