Fifteen minutes in a dental chair can ward off diabetes-related gum disease, according to a recent study that shows a correlation between regular dental visitsand the growing epidemic of diabetes. The American Diabetes Association estimates nearly 24 million people are diabetic. Of that number, 5.7 million are unaware they have the disease. Diabetes cases are expected to triple over the next four decades, according to the Centers for Disease Control.

Routine Dental Exams reduces risk of Diabetes, Smile and Skin AestheticsDiabetes weakens the body’s defense against bacterial infections, making diabetics more susceptible to thrush, dry mouth, periodontal (gum) disease and tooth loss—and the relationship goes both ways. Infections increase blood sugar, so it’s more difficult for people with oral health problems to manage their glucose levels. However, emerging research suggests dental health providers play an important role in early detection and intervention of oral diseases due to diabetes.  During regular checkups, dentists can examine the mouth and jaw and spot warning signs of health issues that patients can’t see on their own.

If you have been diagnosed with diabetes, inform your dentist or periodontist before any scheduled treatments.  Also, tell your dentist if you are experiencing any of these symptoms:

  • Draining fluid or bleeding from your teeth or gums
  • Gum swelling or infection that doesn’t heal
  • White or red patches in your mouth
  • Teeth are sensitive to cold, hot or sweets
  • Holes or darks spots on your teeth

Ignoring dental problems or skipping out your checkups can lead to painful and costly repairs. Meola and his team provide state-of-the-art treatments in a comfortable environment, and are committed to preserving your smile—and your health.
