Your Child’s First Dental Visit
Posted on Tue, Jul 26, 2011
According to the Centers for Disease Control, tooth decay is more prevalent in American children than any other chronic infectious disease: five times more common than asthma and seven times more common than hay fever. National studies also estimate one in four children get these destructive holes on the surface of their teeth by the time they turn four. Poor hygiene may affect speech, chewing and your child’s confidence. Fortunately, tooth decay is preventable with proper dental care. That’s why the American Dental Association and American Academy of Pediatrics recommend scheduling your children’s first dental checkup when their first teeth erupt—and no later than the first birthday.
Preparing For Your Child’s First Dental Visit
Taking a child to the dentist for the first time can be nerve wracking for the child and parent. But preparing can help reduce the anxiety of going to the dental office.
- Schedule exams in the morning when your child is less tired and most likely to cooperate.
- Pick a dental practice that is child- and parent-friendly, and focuses on your child’s needs.
- Talk to the child about what to expect and discuss the tools the dentist may use or the sounds that you child will hear at the office.
- Bring a toy or a blanket that comforts or makes your child feel secure.
What to Expect
- The dentist or hygienist may start off with a question and answer session to evaluate your child’s overall health and dental history.
- If needed, the dental professional will take x-rays to check for cavities and proper development of the teeth.
- During the exam, the dentist (a) checks the bite, (b) determines if the upper and lower teeth are fitting together properly, (c) checks for cavities and tooth defects (d) performs a thorough teeth cleaning and applies a fluoride treatment to prevent cavities and strengthen the teeth.
- After the examination, the dentist will advise parents about home dental care; discuss any further treatment such as fillings and schedule a follow-up visit.
