Women, Pregnancy and Tooth Loss: Beyond Wives’ Tales

Routine Dental Care During PregnancyRecent studies give women more reasons to maintain regular dental visits. It’s long been hailed as an “old wives’ tale,” but there may be some truth to the notion, “gain a child, lose a tooth.” In fact, a New York University research suggests there’s a direct correlation between missing teeth and the number of children a woman has. Even more devastating, a recently released report from the British Dental Health Foundation states that women with gum disease and tooth loss are 11 times more likely to develop breast cancer.

While more research is needed to explain the links, dentists and scientists agree that good oral hygiene is crucial to overall health.  That means keeping the usual six month dental appointments, even while pregnant. Being vigilant about your oral hygiene routine can prevent a number of dental problems associated with increased hormones and morning sickness. During pregnancy, the hormone progesterone that softens the tissues can make women more prone to conditions such as pregnancy gingivitis. This dental issue causes red, swollen and bleeding gums, especially in the first trimester.

Good oral health can also affect your baby.  Researchers have linked periodontal disease to premature labor and low birth weight. To avoid serious gum disease during pregnancy, make sure to:

  • Keep regular cleaning and check-up appointments
  • Brush your teeth and tongue twice a day, and in between meals, to remove plaque and bacteria
  • Floss areas of your teeth that your toothbrush can’t reach
  • Eat a balanced meal high in calcium for teeth and vitamin C for your gums

Be sure to tell your dental professional if you’re pregnant. This will help determine your treatment plan and delay unnecessary anesthetics, x-rays and other procedures until the second trimester or after delivery.
