When Should My Wisdom Tooth Be Removed?

Wisdom teeth—the third
and last set of molars—typically erupt between the ages of 17 and 25. Corresponding with a move into adulthood, this period is aptly coined the “the age of wisdom.” Anthropologists theorize that wisdom teeth were useful to early humans because of their rough diet and wider jaws—which allowed extra teeth to grow without any problems. However, a majority of today’s adult mouthsdon’t provide the space needed for these molars. The lack of room in the dental arch presents potential problems, and the teeth must often be removed.
Problems with Wisdom Teeth
A properly aligned wisdom tooth functions like any other molar. However, these teeth that grow at the very back of your mouth sometimes become “impacted,” which means that they fail to erupt, grow sideways or only partially emerge. Impacted teeth create an opening for bacteria, which can lead to infection, pain, facial swelling, jaw stiffness, and damage to neighboring teeth. In addition, the angle at which the teeth are growing makes them difficult to clean—putting wisdom teeth at risk for decay, periodontal disease, and recurring infections. Even more serious, the sac surrounding your impacted tooth can fill with fluid and enlarge, and if left untreated can develop into a cyst and cause problems with your jaw bone.
Extraction of Wisdom Teeth
To prevent complications, your dentist may recommend removing wisdom teeth before they come in. Extraction in young patients is generally less problematic because the roots are not as fully developed and the bone is less dense. Post-operative recovery time tends to be longer in older people. Like any surgical procedure, wisdom teeth surgery comes with a set of risks and should only be performed by a skilled dentist.
